A moving cohesive interface model for brittle fracture propagation

چکیده

Abstract. In this work, an advanced numerical model, based on the cohesive zone approach and moving mesh technique, is proposed to simulate fracture propagation in quasi-brittle materials. particular, procedure consists of two stages. former one, according inter-element crack approach, once a suitable stress criterion for onset satisfied, boundary, representing segment, selected aligned along direction by using well-known technique. latter one zero-thickness interface element, equipped with traction-separation law, inserted on-the-fly previously order describe nonlinear process. Comparisons available experimental results have highlighted effectiveness reliability model prediction brittle phenomenon.

A phase-field model for cohesive fracture

In this paper a phase-field model for cohesive fracture is developed. After casting the cohesive zone approach in an energetic framework, which is suitable for incorporation in phase-field approaches, the phase-field approach to brittle fracture is recapitulated. The approximation to the Dirac function is discussed with particular emphasis on the Dirichlet boundary conditions that arise in the ...

Fracture of a model cohesive granular material.

We study experimentally the fracture mechanisms of a model cohesive granular medium consisting of glass beads held together by solidified polymer bridges. The elastic response of this material can be controlled by changing the cross-linking of the polymer phase, for example. Here we show that its fracture toughness can be tuned over an order of magnitude by adjusting the stiffness and size of t...

Nonequilibrium brittle fracture propagation: Steady state, oscillations, and intermittency.

A minimal model is constructed for two-dimensional fracture propagation. The heterogeneous process zone is presumed to suppress stress relaxation rate, leading to non-quasistatic behavior. Using the Yoffe solution , I construct and solve a dynamical equation for the tip stress. I discuss a generic tip velocity response to local stress and find that noise-free propagation is either at steady sta...

A Size and Boundary Effects Model for Quasi-Brittle Fracture

The fracture behaviors of quasi-brittle materials are commonly specimen size (size effect) and crack size (boundary effect) dependent. In this study, a new failure model is developed for characterizing the size and boundary effects. The derivative of the energy release rate is firstly introduced to predict the nominal strength dominated by the strength mechanism. Combined with the energy criter...

A thought model for the fracture of brittle solids

1. Problem formulation. The processes governing the fracture of brittle solids are, at present, much less illuminated than those related to plastic deformations. The reason is that it is very difficult to observe the detailed fracture process directly. All one can determine is the load, which acted immediately before fracture started, and the path and nature of the fracture surface. Because dur...
